Sanibel Island is a shell seeker’s paradise
But here we are. It is Jan. 1, splat in the middle of a vacation on Sanibel Island, Fla., and my 11-year-old daughter is ferociously determined to rise before daylight to comb the shores for shells. In pitch-black darkness. With headlamps.

Bicycle Hub
Sanibel Island is taking a step to help its growing biking community. The island's bike club is building a new hub for bicyclists. As soon as you drive into Sanibel Island you probably won't get far without seeing a bicyclist. That has prompted Sanibel Bicycle Club member Tom Sharbaugh to help come up a plan to get riders rolling in the right direction. The site, on the side of Periwinkle Way will feature a shaded area complete with a map of trails, history of the island, and a drinking fountain. It comes at no cost to the city or taxpayers thanks to a long list of businesses and organizations whose donations are making the hub a reality.

Historic Sanibel home gets much-needed face lift
A historic home on Sanibel Island is getting a much-needed face lift. The "Morning Glories" house was first built back in 1926. Eighty-five years later, Sanibel historians are taking steps to ensure the home is in it's best shape yet. The "Morning Glories" home was first delivered to Sanibel back in 1926, straight from a Sears Roebuck catalogue by barge in 30,000 pieces and assembled in a matter of months entirely by hand. Despite 85 years of wear-and-tear and over half a dozen hurricanes, the home is still standing. The Sanibel Historical Museum & Village is closed to the public until November. For more information, visit their website at www.sanibelmuseum.org.

Time still moves slowly on Sanibel, Captiva islands
If you're in a hurry, you don't belong on Sanibel. That friendly admonition has been a pearl of wisdom on this leisurely Gulf Coast island for decades. In the 1970s, when a high-school buddy and I used to take day trips across the remote Alligator Alley from Miami, the narrow, twisting, two-lane roads on Sanibel and Captiva islands were always seemingly in danger of eroding into the Gulf of Mexico — a prospect that made the notion of speed unthinkable.
